History of Oil Tanks
Homes that are built during the turn of the century usually had coal for heat. As oil became widely available, homeowners quickly started turning to oil instead of coal to heat their houses. This produced a mass exodus of underground and aboveground oil tanks being installed. Most homes built from the early 1900s to the 1960s relied on oil to heat their homes. However, by the mid 1960s natural gas pipelines had been installed throughout urban areas and into the countryside so most homeowners stopped using oil tanks for heat. Unfortunately, in most cases, the tanks were left to decompose and rarely removed.
It was not until recent years when new requirements were enacted that homeowners who wanted to sell their property, purchase homeowner’s insurance, or take out a mortgage on their house started facing the reality that they would have to have the oil tank removed to go forward with their plans
Environmental Dangers of Oil Tanks
Both above and underground oil tanks pose an environmental threat as they age. The chances of a tank leaking into the surrounding soil increase dramatically with each year that passes. At Tanktech, we have found that approximately one in five underground tanks has started to leak at the time of removal. When a tank has started to leak, a property owner might notice a diesel odour in their basement and visible oil in the sumps, drains, or surrounding ditches.

If a property owner is unsure if an underground tank exists on their property then we will be more than happy to send out one of our trained technicians to perform a scan to determine if there is a tank on the premises. If our technician does not locate a tank, then they will issue a Tank Scan Certificate that states there is no tank on the property.
When a tank is detected on the property, Tanktech will provide a tank removal estimate stating how much the tank will cost to safely remove. If the property owner decides to have the tank removed then we will credit the cost of the tank scan towards the cost of the removal.
